Appointment Advisory Committee Profile C – Member Inclusion & society

Established in 2023 by the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations, the Herdenkingscomité Slavernijverleden (Slavery Memorial Committee) is dedicated to the recognition of the history of slavery and its impact on the present. The Committee advises the national government, promotes education and dialogue, and supports initiatives in the areas of remembrance, restoration and equality. For the Appointment Advisory Committee (BAC) we are looking for three members who together will ensure a careful, independent and representative nomination of candidates for the Committee.

About the Appointment Advisory Committee

The Appointment Advisory Committee (BAC) consists of three independent members who are jointly responsible for expert, balanced and transparent nominations of candidates for vacant seats on the Committee. The BAC functions independently of the Committee, public administration and/or governments, and has a rotating chairmanship. Members are appointed by the Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations for a term of four years, with the possibility of one-time reappointment. In addition to the members of the BAC, the Minister appoints only the Chairman of the Commemoration Committee, upon nomination by the members of the Committee.

The BAC consists of three natural persons, knowledgeable, independent and socially engaged, each with their own profile and additional emphases. The committee appoints a chairman from among its members. Members of the BAC perform their duties independently of public administration. This means that they have not been active in the public administration, government or parliament of any of the countries or public entities of the Kingdom or Suriname in the past five years.

General profile member BAC

Members collectively possess knowledge and experience in the following areas:

  • the transatlantic slavery past and its spillover into the present;
  • memory culture, colonial history and education;
  • communication, culture and community building;
  • governance, appointment procedures and social sensitivity;
  • financial and managerial judgment.
Job requirements for each member:
  • Has demonstrable knowledge of slavery history as evidenced by previous positions, publications or community involvement;
  • Is widely recognized as authoritative or leading within the relevant field;
  • Possesses independent judgment, integrity and social sensitivity;
  • Has experience with appointments and/or selection processes in complex and socially sensitive contexts;
  • Is balanced, connecting and mindful of diversity within the Kingdom of the Netherlands;
  • Acts independently and contributes to a balanced composition of the Committee;
  • Possesses administrative qualities given the rotating presidency.

In addition to the general profile, additional requirements apply to each member depending on the specific focus of the position.

C. Member with a broad perspective on inclusive representation and societal impact

Contributes to a broad societal perspective on representation, remembrance, and the contemporary impact of the slavery past in the Netherlands and the Kingdom.

Additional profile aspects:
  • Knowledge of remembrance culture, education, and representation related to the slavery past.
  • Experience with themes such as diversity, inclusion, intergenerational transmission, or community building.
  • Able to interpret contemporary societal issues concerning institutional racism, social justice, and community cohesion.
  • Able to assess whether nominated candidates have genuine connection or affinity with the remembrance and contemporary impact of the slavery past in the Netherlands and the Kingdom.
